Overview

In honor of Hispanic Heritage Month — a time to celebrate the culture, traditions and contributions of Latin people — we’re spotlighting an area where inequality and stereotyping persist: depictions of Latin Americans in television and film.

The harm of negative portrayals lingers long after the episode or movie ends. What appears on screen informs public opinion which can then be exploited for political gain, lead to housing or employment discrimination or used to provoke violence against people of Latin American descent.

What can be done to accurately portray Latin Americans in popular media? Additionally, how can visibility be increased and opportunities created for Latino actors, producers, screenwriters and directors?

Our PSEG True Diversity film is Latinos Beyond Reel, a documentary about how Latinos are marginalized and vilified in the U.S. media with critical consequences.
