Overview
A thriving theater district existed in Newark during the early decades of the 20th century, a time when Market Street and the intersection with Broad was lined with cafes and cabarets. The city’s theaters and vaudeville houses served as a proving ground for Broadway-bound musicals and performers including Buster Keaton, Charlie Chaplin, Mae West, the Marx Brothers and Fred Astaire.
The presenter is Michael Immerso, a writer, cultural historian and activist. He is the author of Coney Island: The People’s Playground and Newark’s Little Italy: The Vanished First Ward, and the novels Stephen Magus and Worlds End.
